You will find many people on
forums complaining about the Ramipril Cough but Doctors still seem to be in
denial. I was on Ramipril for three years and had the dreaded cough and sore
throat. But I eventually, after numerous tests convinced my Doctor that
Ramipril wasn’t for me and changed to something else.

At the ripe old age of 46 I went
to the Doctor because I kept feeling dizzy occasionally. I would be cooking or
playing with the kids and would just feel sick and dizzy. He concluded that I
had high blood pressure or Hypotension as it’s sometimes called. He put me on
2.5 mg’s of Ramipril and this had little effect so it was gradually raised to
10 mg’s per day. This did get my blood pressure down to an acceptable level.
It wasn’t until my dosage was
raised to 10 mg’s that I started to have constipation plus the dreaded Ramipril
cough and dry throat. I was told by my Doctor (which seems to be the norm going
by the forums on this subject) that it was my body adjusting to the drug. One
year passed and I still had a sore throat, even my customers and colleagues
were commenting on how long my sore throat had been hanging around. I decided
to try again with my Doctor to see whether he would acknowledge it was a
problem now it has been a year.
I was worried about the sore
throat so went to the Doctors and he sent me for tests. They put a camera up my
nose and down my throat to have a look but no issues or anomalies were
discovered and it was concluded that it must be Acid Reflux causing my sore
throat. So I was given even more pills for Acid Reflux and also drugs to help
with the constipation. In a year I had gone from someone that didn’t take any
drugs apart from the odd Paracetamol to a man that needs a small medicine cabinet
all of his own.
By the second year I also
struggled with exercise and any physical activity, I was becoming an old man
before my time. I read numerous articles on the internet and trawled through
pages of information on managing your blood pressure without Ramipril and was
getting nowhere fast, well not that fast because of the breathlessness caused
by Ramipril side effects.
Now I am not the kind of person
to give up so even though I felt drained most of the time I persevered and went
back to the Doctors and demanded he find some other way of controlling my Blood
Pressure. After three years and numerous tests organised by my Doctor (which I
went along with, even though I was convinced it was Ramipril that caused these
problems) he finally admitted that Ramipril obviously doesn’t agree with me.
He changed my medication to Candesartan
Cilexetil which is a slow release drug as apposed to Ramipril which gives you
the whole dose all at once. So if you take Ramipril 10 mg every morning you are
getting the full 10 mg’s within an hour and this is why it affects people so
adversely. When I was on Ramipril 10 mg I would get to work feeling weak and
nauseas some days and it was only when I explained this that he agreed to
change my medication.
I have been on Candesartan
Cilexetil for a year now and my blood pressure is so much better as I don’t get
the ill effects of the huge Ramipril 10 mg dose first thing in the morning. The
breathlessness has gone and my medicine cabinet only has one little packet in
it with the days of the week on and a small box of Paracetamol. Constipation
has also gone and I feel so much better, no dry throat or soreness. Now I am
not a Doctor so I don’t know whether Candesartan Cilexetil suits everyone or
all blood pressure related problems but I do know it changed my life and I am
my old self again, witty to the point of annoyance and singing quite poorly
every morning while in the shower.
If you are having problems with the
Ramipril cough ask your Doctor about Candesartan Cilexetil it’s worth a try. If
you do nothing… nothing gets better. If that fails, try natural remedies as they
are a great help in combating blood pressure and hypertension.
