Treating High Blood Pressure With Green Tea

Green tea is known to reduce hypertension and has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years. How does green tea lower high blood pressure?


Why is it effective


The secret of lies in the fact green tea is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate, which is a powerful anti-oxidant.


It is made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. The leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong teas, which come from the same plant, are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.


How Does It Lower High Blood Pressure (BP)?


It enables blood vessels to relax. Tea has caffeine but, unlike coffee, it actually relaxes you and your blood vessels and lowers BP naturally without side effects.


ACE, one cause of high blood pressure, is inhibited


Studies show that green tea catechins, especially EGCG, inhibit ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme), that causes the tiny muscles surrounding the arteries to clamp down, making the arteries smaller, which forces your BP to rise. Laboratory tests have shown that green tea blocks salt uptake in the intestine leading to lowered BP readings. Also theanine, a protein from the tea, lowered blood pressure in genetically hypertensive rats but not in normal ones. Reduced risk of hypertension for middle-aged people


Recent research, following an eight year study, has shown that middle-aged people who drank more than 600ml of green tea each day have a 65% lower risk of developing hypertension. People who drank between 110ml and 600ml of it daily for more than a year showed 46% lower risk of high blood pressure.


People who did not drink it or who drank less than 110 ml daily had no protection from hypertension.
This protection from the development of hypertension by drinking the tea did not show up statistically until after one year of daily use. Short-term human trials were inconclusive.


Given all the evidence, green tea is most effective at reducing hypertension if we drink four or five cups of green tea each day. "It is Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one" (Ancient Chinese Proverb). Making green tea part of your daily diet can help lower your high blood pressure naturally.

The Side Effects of Ramipril Changed My Life


In 2008 I became a casualty of the recession as it began. I worked for a retail furniture store whose sales took a serious nose dive. I was a retail manager earning pretty good money, I was married with three lovely children and life was pretty good. But my life was just about to take a serious and devastating turn for the worse and the side effects of Ramipril only exacerbated these problems.
I was made redundant in December 2008 and this was pretty awful but we were in a better place than most as we had a thriving online business. However, yes it gets worse, in April 2009 our business sales took a serious nose dive as well and I was financially in trouble for the first time in my adult life. I had to claim unemployment benefit. Up to this point I hadn’t really had any illnesses, I had a few injuries from accidents in my miss-spent youth but that was it really and as far as I was aware I was healthy.
Suddenly I began to get dizzy spells and the frustration of being unemployed brought on hypertension and consequently my blood pressure seemed to raise in line with the unemployment figures month by month. My Doctor prescribed Ramipril; he started me on 2.5g, that didn’t work so it was increased to 5g, and eventually 10g. This did stop the headaches and dizzy spells and my blood pressure came right down. All good you would think however, what the Doctor didn’t mention was all the side effects of Ramipril and how they would control my life.
The side effects of Ramipril are many and varied, affecting everyone differently. I started to get out of breath all the time and it got to the stage where I couldn’t walk to the bus stop. By now I had lost both our vehicles so the bus and walking was my only transport. This of course made it impossible to get work as we live in a rural county where the phone book has twenty five pages of farmers and one of retail outlets. I could barely get to the interviews and when I did I prayed that the interview wasn’t upstairs. I was sent for blood tests and they found that the dosage of Ramipril was affecting my liver function.
The other Ramipril side effects that I experienced were dry throat and phlegm on the chest every morning coupled with a lack of energy and a general break down of my body and joints.  My nails became brittle and kept breaking and my joints ached all the time. When I was out with my family, shopping etc. pensioners would pass me by, happy and healthy and I was struggling to keep up with them and I was only in my forties. I kept visiting the Doctor and they just said it’s the side effects of Ramipril and there is no alternative, so this was to be my life from here on in.
It also occurred to me that if I had a genuine illness or health problem how would they know, when they assume everything is caused by the side effects of Ramipril. I was lucky I didn’t have any real issues as it turned out and I found an alternative way of controlling my blood pressure. I am back at work and our business is back up and running and we are planning to move to a bigger house. Are You at Risk From High Blood Pressure?
